Colombian singer/songwriter Carlos Vives moved to Bogota at an early age, where he developed appreciation for the ballads associated with that capital city, native Indian music from the Andes, and the accordion-driven vallenato from the coast. His work is a fusion of many elements of Latin American musical tradition.
In 1993 Vives reached deep into those roots and pulled out Clasicos de la Provincia, a collection of traditional vallenato songs which rescue the pure essence of vallenato while giving it a modern touch. Most of the songs had been previously recorded by other artists in Colombia, but Vives's blending of rock and pop influences with the accordion put Colombian music on the map. Since his release of the traditional vallenato album, he has released 11 studio albums and appeared in countless live and television performances.
