Rickles started in the boroughs of New York City, mixing stand-up with his impression of famous actors of the day, which included Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Cary Grant. On a lighter note, Rickles was also the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the "Toy Story" movies.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he was working in nightclubs. Never a great joke teller in the traditional sense, Rickles suddenly found himself talking directly to the audience and throwing "off the cuff" lines at them. The laughs came and the rest, as they say, is history.
