Popular in the 70s and 80s, Kool & The Gang is one of the few funk and rhythm bands to stand the test of time. The band began in 1964, with a just thirteen-year-old Robert Bell, his brother, and five high school friends got together to form an instrumental band called the Jazziacs. The name didn't really stick, so the group changed to the current Kool & The Gang in 1969. Whether it was the new name or their established fanbase, something clicked with the big-time producers and they signed to the record label De-Lite Records.
The band went on to produce a variety of top-ten hits for the next two decades, including "Jungle Boogie", "Hollywood Swinging", "Get Down On It", and "Joanna". Their songs have been sampled by modern rap, hip hop, and funk performers across the world, including De La Soul, Nas, N.W.A., Kris Kross, Jermaine Dupri, and Snoop Dogg, among others.
